The spring meeting of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club was begun today, in the presence of a good assemblage, the weather being all that could be desired. The enclosures were looking extremely well, the many improvements recently effected forming the theme of general commendation. The following are the results:-
TRIAL HANDICAP TROT (in saddle), of 40 sovs; second horse 8 sovs and third horse 4 sovs from the stake. Two miles.

Mr E Corser's blk m Kate, aged, 26sec (T Frost) 2.
Mr J Smithers's b m Jenny H, 4yrs, 18sec (M Edwards) 3.
The Fiddler scr, Secrecy 9sec, Mesmerist 11sec, Answer 14sec, The Fly 20sec, Home Rule 20sec, Specify 20sec, Ayrshire Lad 26sec and Glenmuick 28sec also started.
Lena Belle quickly trotted to the head of affairs, and at the half distance she was leading Jenny H and Kate who were together. Kate, passing Jenny H drew up to Lena Belle going along the back stretch, but breaking, allowed Lena Belle to go on and win comfortably by five lengths, a similar distance seperating second and third horse. Time 5min 24 3/5sec. Dividend £11 16s.
PONY HANDICAP (in harness) of 30 sovs; second horse 6 sovs and third horse 3 sovs from the stake. Two miles.

The Duckling immediately assumed command, with Mero and Bliss Irvington as her nearest attendants, and the three drew well clear of the others. When one round had been completed Bliss Irvington passed The Duckling, and in the next half mile had drawn clear of her. The remainder of the field was in straggling order, Daybreak, although trotting well, being well nigh last. Bliss Irvington was never troubled, and won by yards, Pansy Irvington third. Time 5min 34sec. Dividend £2 4s. SPRING HANDICAP (in saddle) of 100 sovs; second horse 20 sovs and third horse 10 sovs from the stake. Two miles.

Florrie 10sec, Occidental 12sec, Dictator 15sec, Rothschild Boy 17sec (8sec pen) and Lady May 22sec also started.
Wenlock trotting in great style, was leading Shylock by nearly a hundred yards at the half-distance, while Premier was gradually overhauling the leaders. The latter ranged alongside Shylock running down the backstretch for the last time but broke badly. Wenlock commenced the last lap well in front of his opponents, and going on, trotted home an easy winner by forty-five yards from Shylock, with Premier two lengths away third. Time 5min 8sec. Dividend £7 8s.
ADVANCE HANDICAP (in harness) of 50 sovs; second horse 10 sovs and third horse 5 sovs from the stake. Two miles.

There was fine weather for the second day of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club's Spring Meeting. There was a large attendance and the sum of £7933 was passed through the totalisator.
The following are the results:-
INNOVATION HANDICAP of 50 sovs. Two miles.- Moonbeam 1; Modesty 2; Veto 3. Six others started. Time 5min 26sec. Dividend £3 18s.
SPREYDON HANDICAP of 75 sovs. Two miles. - Dusk 1; Spec 2; Mermaid 3. Four others started. Time 5min 26sec. Dividend £2 4s.
PRINCE OF WALES HANDICAP of 140 sovs. Two miles. - Jessie Palm, scr, 1; Dictator, 15sec, 2; Premier, 5sec, 3. Six others started. Time 4min 43 3/5sec, a record for the colony. Dividend £2 10s.
LADIES BRACELET of 25 sovs. Two miles. - Miss Childe 1; Gambler 2; Perseverence II 3. Twenty two others started. Time 5min 24sec. Dividend £206 4s. A protest for inconsistency was dismissed, but the stakes and totalisator investment impounded pending an appeal to the Association.
